READ: FUZZMONSTER’S Master DAT Collection
I’ve been fortunate enough to work with FUZZMONSTER and archiving his master DAT collection. They have recorded over 1,000 different concerts ranging from 1993 to the present. I started with the early DAT tapes and they have been somewhat difficult to transfer. This is due to their age and being recorded in LP mode. Meaning the tapes are recorded at half speed and can cause more errors as it is not DAT’s native speed. This also attributes to higher wear on the play heads themselves. The early recordings were taped on a Sony TCD-D3 and Sonic Studio mics. They are all of quality. You can follow Fuzz’s YouTube account above to see them as they are released. It usually takes me just a day or two to transfer a box digitally. If there are enough errors, I will do a 2nd or 3rd pass through two other DAT recorders I have. But given the age of the DAT tapes, it will be very difficult to get perfect passes. Just because they are reaching shelf life. Funny how all of these audio companies touted how these will last forever because they are “digital.” This isn’t the first collection I have had some challenges with.
